Pinning

Tailoring Thursdays™, Tips, Tricks and Techniques for Sewers

Pinning

According to some people there is a right way and a wrong way for everything.  To me, the "right way" for sewing things, is the way that gets you to sew!

But there are some things that, if done in a specific way, can make your sewing easier, more efficient, and even make your finished product look more refined.

One of those things is pinning.  The way you pin can make all the difference in the world.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

You should place your pins so that they are Parallel to your seam.

When you place your pins in this way you will have less gathering in your seams.  You will also notice that your seams line up nicer without bunching.  You will not end up with large gaps where the top and bottom fabrics do not lay flat.

There are of course exceptions where you will want to place your pins differently.  Certain types of quilt piecing and some curved seams may require special pin placement.

One of the exceptions I make is for "placement pins"
these are the pins that let me know where to
start and stop sewing on a seam.

Another advantage to pinning this way is that you can sew right up to the edge of the pin and easily remove your pins as you sew without poking your fingers!

And you won't sew over your pins because the are easy to see.

When pinning properly you will not be able to sew over your pins, which is much, much better for your machine! :)
